What drives the price of a tree job
Tree surgery is priced by the tree and the site, not by a rate card. A tree in open lawn that can be felled in one go is a short morning. Prices are quoted as a job rather than an hourly rate, which is the honest way to sell this work. A firm paid by the hour is paid for time rather than for a finished tree, and a slow crew then costs you more for the same result. Compare what each price includes: the method, the protection of the site, the clearing up, the timber, and whether the stump is part of it.
Two firms can hold very different prices for the same tree and both be straight with you. One may plan to fell into open ground. The other may plan to dismantle in sections because a shed, a rose bed or a greenhouse sits underneath. Different methods, different days, and the written method usually explains the gap.

The cost of tree surgery comes down to time, equipment, risk and waste, and any of the four can change a job out of recognition. A climb with rigging, a mobile platform on hire, a crane lift over a roof, traffic management on a lane or a lorry load of timber to tip all lengthen the day.

A written quote should read like a plan, not a figure on the back of a card. It should describe the tree as it stands, name the work in the trade's own terms, and set out the method: whether the tree is felled, dismantled in sections or reduced, and what rigging and protection the crew will use.
What belongs in the written quote
What leaves and what stays: chip on site or taken away, timber kept as logs or removed, stump ground out or left. The working days, the machinery coming onto the site, and the name of the person to ring if anything changes. On a build, a sequence that fits around other trades is worth having in writing.
What should not be in it
It should not be a number with nothing behind it. Topping a tree is not a specification, and neither is a day's work with no method or finished shape described. Both leave the crew to decide what you meant.
